“Build a Better World for Women and Girls”

Mission

Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy.

Vision

Zonta International envisions a world in which women’s rights are recognized as human rights and every woman is able to achieve her full potential. In such a world women have access to all resources and are represented in decision-making positions on an equal basis with men. In such a world, no woman lives in fear of violence.

History

Zonta Club of Birmingham was chartered in 1940 by women at the top of their professions in our community who supported the goals of Zonta International. Zonta International is a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, there are more than 30,000 members in 1,200+ clubs in 66 countries.

Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, Zonta takes its name from a Sioux Indian word meaning “honest and trustworthy.” Zontians share their time, talents, skills, and energy with local and international service projects designed to advance the status of women worldwide.

As an international organization, Zonta provides the opportunity for cultivating friendships and associations with women around the world. An International Convention is held every two years in a country with active Zonta clubs. As a premier NGO (Non-Governmental Organization), Zonta International maintains a consultative status with the following United Nations agencies: UN Women, UNFPA, UNICEF, United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, and Girls Not Brides.
